Massive firings in Brewster, and a big debate about illegal immigration

Federal immigration authorities had alerted Gebbers Farms that a number of its employees' hiring forms were suspect. Unless those employees could prove they were in this country legally, the company would let them go.

Many couldn't. Like the vast majority of America's agricultural work force, they were illegal immigrants who used fake documents to get jobs picking and packing fruit, in this case in and around this small town on the Columbia River north of Wenatchee.

The unemployment rate among immigrants in the U.S. outpaced that of native-born workers last month, with the gap particularly pronounced among women.

The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals today upheld Oklahoma’s authority to enforce a law that requires public contractors to participate in the federal E-Verify program. The majority on the Court’s three-judge panel decided a lower court had erred in its determination that the law’s E-Verify provision was preempted.

Frederick County is taking steps to prevent contractors from hiring illegal immigrant workers.

On Dec. 15, Frederick County Commissioners will consider whether to adopt new purchasing regulations. Those regulations would include requiring major construction contractors to certify that they and their subcontractors are not knowingly employing illegal aliens.

Sen. Durbin (D-Ill.) uses his leadership position continually to make false claims about E-Verify's reliability and to project the absolutely foolish notion that unemployment and immigration have no relationship. But while he laments the 125,000 who have recently lost their unemployment benefits (I do, too), he ignores the fact that HIS immigration policies now in place have given out 125,000 brand new work permits to foreign workers during the last month.

Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) is offering an amendment to the unemployment extension bill that would require new applicants for unemployment compensation to have their citizenship status verified using E-Verify. The amendment is being offered to H.R.3548, which would extend unemployment benefits for 14 weeks.

Senate Clears DHS Appropriations Conference Report

The Senate today cleared for the President’s signature the conference report accompanying the FY 2010 Homeland Security spending bill (H.R. 2892). The measure, which passed the Senate by a 79-19 margin, includes a three-year reauthorization of the E-Verify workplace eligibility verification system. Prior to passage, Senators lamented the conference committee’s removal of a permanent E-Verify reauthorization and other immigration enforcement-related provisions.
